Post-Operative Care After a Tooth Extraction

After a tooth extraction, proper care is essential to ensure safe and speedy healing. Please follow these instructions carefully.
General Extraction Instructions
- 1Bite on the gauze for 30–60 minutes after extraction.
- 2Do not spit for the first 24 hours. Swallow your saliva.
- 3Do not drink through a straw for the first 24 hours.
- 4Do not smoke or vape for the next 3 days.
- 5Do not drink alcohol for the next 3 days or until the antibiotic course lapses.
- 6Avoid hot food or drinks until the anaesthesia wears off.
- 7Do not touch the extraction site with your tongue or finger until it heals.
- 8Do not blow your nose unnecessarily.
- 9Avoid eating on the extraction side. Use the opposite side to chew.
- 10Eat a soft diet for the first 2 days.
- 11Do not brush your teeth on the day of extraction.
- 12Gently rinse with lukewarm salt water after 24 hours, 3–5 times a day for at least 3 days.
- 13Brush your teeth normally but avoid the affected area.
- 14Do not use any pain medication other than what was prescribed by your dentist.
- 15Aspirin-based medication will result in prolonged bleeding.
- 16Apply ice packs if you experience swelling.
- 17If there is bleeding at home, use a damp teabag and bite on it for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, call us.
- 18If pain worsens after 2–3 days, call us.
Additional Instructions for Surgical Extractions
- 1Follow all the above instructions.
- 2Mild discomfort and slight swelling are expected and normal.
- 3Apply ice packs for 20 minutes, remove for 20 minutes. Repeat 3–5 times.
- 4After 24 hours, apply warm packs using the same cycle.
- 5Avoid lifting heavy weights or strenuous exercise.
- 6Rest for at least 24 hours after extraction.
