Braces Care Instructions
By Ultra Smile Dental Studio·
What to DO
- Maintain strict oral hygiene: brush twice and floss once daily (preferably in the evening). Rinse after every meal.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. An interdental brush helps clean around braces (available from Clicks, Dis-Chem, Takealot).
- Eat soft foods, especially at the beginning. Cut harder foods into small pieces.
- Wear a mouthguard for contact sports.
- Stay hydrated — drink plenty of water.
- Attend all scheduled appointments.
- Use orthodontic wax for discomfort.
- Report any loose or broken parts immediately.
What NOT to Do
- Avoid hard foods — hard candies, nuts, popcorn, pretzels, biltong, bones, and ice.
- Avoid sticky and chewy foods — caramels, gum, gummy candies.
- Avoid sugary and acidic drinks. If consumed, brush immediately after.
- Do not chew on pens, pencils, or fingernails.
- Do not bite directly into hard foods — cut them up first.
- Never skip appointments.
- Never try to adjust your braces yourself.
